As I continued to write and publish, I opened LongTale’s doors to other aspiring authors in 2013, and I take on about five client authors a year.

To date, we have published over 500 3rd-12th graders at the iWRITE Literacy Organization and provide creative writing programming inside economically disadvantaged schools in Houston, Texas. The organization encouraged a healthy sense of competition and reward. Before the decline became so apparent, I had to start a literacy non-profit in 2009 giving creative kids the opportunity to enter their stories and poetry in an annual publishing contest.

I began speaking at educational conferences and on television about how to balancing technology usage and encouraging creativity in childhood. I saw many problems schools and students faced during the rise of testing and a reliance on technology for entertainment.Ĭhildhood creativity and excitement slowly declined. By 2013 I had spoken in over 200 schools and 50 different school districts.

The series became more of a travel adventure, taking me to each of the book settings in Hawaii and also Australia.

It focused on environmentalism and issues that plague the ocean through the eyes of a twelve-year-old professional surfing box shell turtle. I had the opportunity to also tour in San Diego, California while researching for a new chapter book series called, Turtle Town. I spoke in over fifty schools across Texas my first year as an author in 2008, talking about character development, diversity and my love for reptiles in each of my presentations. They were published through my publishing company, LongTale Publishing, and I hit the schools as a visiting author. I had a passion for influencing self-confidence in children, so I started a series of books for upper elementary aged children called, Iggy the Iguana.

My dive into the literacy world started immediately after graduate school for professional counseling. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far. Kids in the 3rd through 12th grade even have a chance to see their short stories, poetry and artwork professionally published in the 11th published anthology: I Write Short Stories by Kids for Kids. The first digital edition focuses on the coronavirus pandemic through the eyes of this young generation. The magazine is written and produced by kids for kids. The iWRITE Youth Club (Houston-area middle school and high school students) launched the organization’s first magazine, The iWRITER, while working virtually together at home.

If they have Internet access, they can go to the nonprofit’s website to sign up for free creative writing activities and how to create characters videos. Young viewers are encouraged to have a pencil and paper ready to participate in each episode’s lesson.
